i have based my new body of work partly on the composition of the larger painting
‘raising questions’. in addition, the titles of the new pieces suggest a connection to
the seminole indians of florida. i have been researching their history including the
patterns and colors used in creating their clothing and weavings. these new
paintings are the result of my interpretation of these compositions. the seminole
indians of the 19th century used the colorful yarns and fabric available from the
local spanish people and then created their own style, very often adding accents
of black stripes. these patterns are very strong and distinctive. to give my
paintings a contemporary look and “make them my own” i have added additional
textural elements through the use of collage and mediums.
