my early summers were spent on the st. clair river
a narrow body of water separatingthe u.s. from canada.
i still imagine the rain on the water and the freighters’
muffled horns. several summers ago, i drove through the
country from bozeman downto yellowstone national park.
at sunset the smoke from the fires on the gallatin mountain
range fused theevening sky with the land below.
my paintings are inspired by memories such as these.
but as recollection is seldom clear or complete, i intend
only a partial description. iexplore the landscape under a
variety of formal constraints – limiting the palette, and
reducing the vistas to tonalities. these restrictions veer
the work toward abstraction. my intent is to achieve an
image that is densely atmospheric and evokes a sense of
quiet isolation.
