for me, painting is about looking.
it is about being completely in the moment and experiencing each color
and the edge of every shape as i record it. when i am outside,
overwhelmed by the power in the simplicity of nature, applying pastel
to the paper communicates the urgency of that emotion.
i become part of that scene by recording the feelings it creates in me.
when my subject is a still life, my focus changes; i am inspired by the
shapes and colors and lines inherent in the objects. the tension between
two vegetables touching or not touching becomes a dialogue that reflects
real life. i record emotions that the subject recalls to me rather than
emotions that the subject inspires in me directly. creating art fulfills an
urgent need to communicate.
