working continually with objects studies allows for exploration into
complex ideas that spin out of ordinary, simple forms such as bowls,
sticks and studio tools. these kinds of useful things are obviously
universal visual references, yet become personal through the ability
to endure. they are rich with symbolic meaning. metaphor guides my
work through ideas of concealment and revelation; what is hidden
and exposed is apparent in both the methods that I use to create the
image and the resulting appearance of the image. these oppositional
realities create tension and narrative. words and numbers, bits of
collaged imagery and surface marks relate in ways to the object
that are suggestive rather than explained.
