kirk newman
born in dallas, texas, and formally educated at the universities
of tulsa and iowa and the ruskin school at oxford university,
kirk newman is one of michigan’s most prolific sculptors,
producing life size works in public, corporate and private spaces.
his works emphasize movement and motion, yet are made
from bronze, one of history’s most permanent, stable materials.
newman’s timeless and often whimsical work has garnered
widespread critical acclaim andhis work has been exhibited
throughout the world, in locations ranging from yugoslavia to
italy to england. newman creates and lives in kalamazoo, michigan,
where he has instructed at the university of michigan, kalamazoo
college and the kalamazoo institute of arts, where he also served
as associate director of education. in 2006, the kia renamed its
art school “the kirk newman art school at the kalamazoo institute
of arts” in recognition of his contribution to the kalamazoo arts
community and his overarching influence on sculpture.
