john gutoskey

there is a magic for me working in these little worlds, altars, or stages
contained in my boxes. of trying to coax meaning, metaphor, and some
kind of visual poetry or language out of all these found objects and
ephemera. it is inherently satisfying for me to crate these assemblages
out of all this disparate, yet for me deeply enthralling found “stuff”.
there can be such a feeling of history and life in many of the old items
i pick up in my scavenging. i’m fascinated with the magic of what a box
can contain: in other worlds which, when entered or perceived, seem to
go from small to monumental in perspective. i am often trying to
transform that feeling or vibe that the found object gives off into some
kind of visual narrative that implies a story, a line of thinking, a feeling,
some issue that I am mulling over, or to imbue it with some kind of
spiritual meaning.
